The new library and the attached forum are imagined to be the new agora for the school. We drew inspiration for the interiors based on chinese art and landscape. In particular, our planning was influenced by Traditional Chinese Walled Courtyard Houses. We imagine that each and every space to be distinct and we designed it to reflect a particular aspect of Chinese aesthetics. We wanted students to experience a sense of exploration and appreciation of Chinese culture as they meander through these courtyards filled with books that are inspired by chinese values and aesthetics.

The Grand Staircase serves both as a ceremonial space while also allowing students to sit casually as they enjoy themselves being immersed in the books and culture available to them. The Agora itself is designed in a similar fashion, serving as a communal space for activities while also allowing students to casually utilise the social space in between or after classes.

Hall of Proud History: a library zone dedicated to Singapore History, Pioneers and distinguished members of Hwa Chong Institution’s alumni members

Forum: This space is designed as a sheltered outdoor space where students can gather casually for social events and more.

Path of 10,000.00 bamboos: Chinese art and landscape influenced the design of this library area dedicated Chinese Art and Culture.
